Pottsgrove High Parade Surprises Top Seniors
UPPER POTTSGROVE PA – Pottsgrove High School Class of 2020 Valedictorian Hannah Waldt, and Salutatorian Abigail Dzordzorme, were caught off guard Monday afternoon (May 11, 2020) , when a honking caravan of dozens of cars filled with waving admirers acknowledged their academic accomplishments with a surprise parade past their homes.
Neither Waldt or Dzordzorme had any hint of the event-to-come, but their families were given advanced warning that something special was headed their way and promised to ensure they were at home at the time.
The parade formed up in the parking lot of the Hillside Aquatic Club where, by chance, an entirely different group of Pottsgrove students had congregated to create a similar caravan for celebrating a friend’s birthday.
The two groups agreed to unite for added effect.
First through the streets of Upper Pottsgrove, and next across Lower Pottsgrove, the occasionally cacophonous crowd first greeted Waldt (above) and then Dzordzorme (below) with specially made lawn signs presented by high school Principal Dr. Bill Ziegler (above at left). He was nattily suited for the event in a maroon velveteen blazer. District Community Relations Director Gary DeRenzo (at top) snapped photos. Some exchanged face-masked hugs.
Neighbors in nearby homes came out to offer best wishes too.
The star students’ parents were momentarily overwhelmed. “I just can’t believe they did that,” Waldt’s mother said with an astonished smile. “That was so wonderful.” Dzordzorme’s father gleefully applauded and thanked all who made the effort. “The best, the best,” he said of the occasion.
