POTTSTOWN PA – The Payless ShoeSource retail store inside Coventry Mall on Route 724 will inevitably lock its doors sometime in coming weeks, as part of the chain’s bankruptcy protection plan filed last month. For now, though, according to an article in Friday’s (March 15, 2019) edition of USA Today, it seems there’s still some sole and leather left in the North Coventry Township location.
All 2,600 Payless stores in the U.S. and Canada are going out of business. About 14 percent of them are among a first wave of closings due by the end of March, according to A&G Realty Partners, the firm that’s managing the sale of the stores’ leases. Pennsylvania sites in Allentown, Bensalem, Exton, Grove City, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton, and Upper Darby are on its list.
Not Pottstown. Not yet.
The article assures shoppers all will close by late May, but stores where inventory liquidation sales are brisk could be the last to go. Local buyers still have a little time, if they’re inclined, to snag a mall-sized bargain on remaining choices in pumps or wingtips. Be forewarned: sales are final, and stores are no longer accepting returns or store gift cards, the story stated.
Locations in about three dozen other countries, including 420 company-owned stores and 370 international franchisee stores, will remain open, the newspaper reported.
