Gilbertsville Donation Response Overwhelming

GILBERTSVILLE PA – Community response to a donation drive created by Gilbertsville retailer Merkel’s Shoes, 1070 E Philadelphia Ave., has been so overwhelming that its volunteers can hardly keep pace with their packing, according to posts Friday (Sept. 1, 2017) on its Facebook page.

The long-time footwear store issued a plea late last week for area residents to donate clothing, personal grooming products, and infant items at its location. It offered to pack up the goods and drive them down to Texas on Thursday (Sept. 7). What the staff possibly didn’t anticipate was the reach of social media: its offer was shared more than 660 times over only two days.

The store has been inundated. “Wow! The donation amount has been AMAZINGGGGG!,” it reported on Facebook. “We are overwhelmed with clothing, so we are asking to hold off on the clothing until we can catch up.”

What it said it needs more of, though, are:

  • Bottled water and canned goods;
  • Animal supplies;
  • Toiletries including deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste;
  • Baby items including diapers, baby food, formula, baby bottles;
  • Children’s coloring books and reading books; and
  • Cleaning supplies, storage containers, and plastic tubs.

For more information, call the store during business hours at 610-369-2870.
