POTTSTOWN PA – Two area merchants – Salon Twenty-Two and Spa at 2135 E. High St., Sanatoga, and Stone’s Hearing Aid Services, 51 E. High St., Pottstown – will serve during August (2017) as drop-off points to collect back-to-school supplies for a “Stuff The Bus” program being run by the Olivet Boys & Girls Club. Olivet operates and oversees activities at the Ricketts Community Center on Beech Street.
Stuff the Bus is a community-wide effort to collect supplies needed for underprivileged children to succeed in school. Area residents are encouraged to stop at either location to donate school supplies. Stone’s will offer a free hearing evaluation upon request to any donor.
Olivet’s eight clubhouses, including the Pottstown site, and six other locations serve more than 3,000 children annually. A majority of youths who benefit from Olivet live at or below the national poverty level.
Buying supplies at the start of the school year is an additional financial burden for many families. Elementary school parents this year can expect to spend $662 per child, a 1-percent increase from 2016. Parents of middle schoolers can expect to shell out $1,001 per child, up 4.6 percent from last year. Olivet hopes to help eliminate that problem by gathering enough supplies for all children to return to school fully equipped and ready to succeed.
