POTTSTOWN ‘DRAFTEES’ ASSIST LOCAL VETERANS – “The ’43 Draftees Organization,” a group that initially included 106 veterans drafted during 1943 for military service in World War II and who successfully returned home, has now dwindled to only three remaining members, including Willard Bickel of Sanatoga, right, shown with his wife Margaret. In disbanding, the organization has turned the balance of its funds over to Pottsgrove American Legion Post 244 for veterans assistance, post Adjutant William C. Worrell reported Saturday (Aug. 10, 2013). Bickel serves as post chaplain and is “very active with our Military Funeral Honor Guard,” Worrell said, in thanking him and the organization for its contribution. As a footnote, Worrell explained that a total of 198 men drafted from Pottstown in 1943 all served in the 26th Infantry Division, better known as the “Yankee Division,” of the U.S. Army. It was deactivated in 1945.
