DEMANDING AN END TO PRISON CONSTRUCTION – Volunteer walkers from various parts of Pennsylvania arrived Monday (May 27, 2013) in Pottstown and gathered on the steps of the Pottstown Public Library, 500 High St., to announce their stand against further construction or expansion of prisons in the state. They are members of DecarceratePA, a Philadelphia-based organization that is conducting a 10-day march to Harrisburg to make what they say is a “grassroots” case before legislators to end mass incarceration, reduce the prison population, and reinvest money in local communities. Earlier in the day the marchers were in Collegeville, and stood in protest against the nearby state correctional facility in Graterford. The group attended a dinner held for them Monday night, and on Tuesday (May 28) were expected to protest in Reading PA.
