HARRISBURG PA – Members of police departments in Lower, Upper and West Pottsgrove, North and East Coventry, Douglass, and Upper Providence townships will be working to limit intoxication-related accidents during the coming week, the Pennsylvania Traffic Safety Information Center reported Monday (June 25, 2012).
The multi-jurisdictional group called “Team DUI” will conduct sobriety check points at several unspecified locations across western Montgomery County in an attempt to catch those who are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicating substances. The effort is scheduled to begin Friday (June 29) and continue beyond the Independence Day (July 4) holiday.
Alcohol-related fatalities account for more than 30 percent of all traffic deaths in Pennsylvania, according to center statistics. Its advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement program helps support the Team DUI effort.
There were 50,413 DUI arrests during 2011 in Pennsylvania, down from more than 52,000 arrests in 2010. The number of drug-involved DUI arrests continued to increase, with 27.6 percent of DUI arrests last year involving drug impairment, it added.
