PLAYING MUSICAL BRIDGES IN POTTSTOWN – Travelers on the four-lane South Hanover Street bridge in Pottstown (above and below), which is part of the primary detour for traffic unable to use the now-closed Keim Street bridge to cross the Schuylkill River in the borough, will endure lane restrictions beginning Thursday (Jan. 5, 2012) and continuing for several months, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The agency has contracted with Loftus Construction Inc. to make $6 million worth of repairs there, with work expected to be completed by July (2012). In the interim, vehicle travel will be reduced to only two lanes, one in each direction.
Just as the South Hanover project starts, borough motorists can now enjoy smoother and unfettered access across the High Street bridge in downtown, which crosses Manatawny Creek (bottom). Its PennDOT-paid repairs were finished well ahead of schedule, and the bridge reopened Dec. 16 (2011).
