Pottstown Rep. Gerlach Votes For Balanced Budget Rule

Rep. Gerlach

WASHINGTON DC — Limerick (PA) Township Congressman Jim Gerlach (6th District) said voted Friday (Nov. 18, 2011) in favor of adopting a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would have required Congress to annually enact a balanced federal budget. The measure fell 29 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass the House.

“Opponents of this balanced budget amendment passed up a historic opportunity to enact the kind of real spending reform the American people are demanding from Washington,” Gerlach said. The proposed balanced budget amendment (H.J. Res. 2) was co-sponsored by 15 Democrats, and 25 Democrats voted to pass the measure. However, the legislation needed 290 votes to pass the House; the final vote was 261-165.

A similar balanced budget proposal passed the House in 1995 with the support of 72 Democrats.
