College Wins Award For Its ‘Environmental Leadership’

Dr. Karen Stout, president of Montgomery County Community College, accepts the 2011 Environmental Leadership Award from association representative Jeff Guzy

KING OF PRUSSIA PA – Montgomery County Community College, which operates campuses in both Pottstown and Blue Bell, won an award Wednesday (May 11, 2011) from the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association for what was described as its “investment in the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.”

The agreement among presidents of institutions of high learning requires the college to meet specific environmental standards in its operations and operating philosophies.

The award was presented during the association’s annual meeting in King of Prussia.

Also during the meeting:

  • Simone Collins, the Norristown PA-based landscape architecture firm on which both Limerick and Lower Pottsgrove townships have relied heavily in recent years for municipal planning, won the association’s Planning Leadership Award for completing the Limerick portion of a Sanatoga Master Plan. Limerick and Lower Pottsgrove are collaborating on their plans for the interchange, which straddles both townships, and future development of commercial and residential projects surrounding it. Simone Collins is still at work on Lower Pottsgrove’s portion.
  • The CEO Council For Growth, which has been an advocate for major changes in the use and construction of U.S. Route 422, won the Private Sector Leadership Award for “leadership along the … 422 Corridor;” and
  • Chester County won the Public Sector Leadership Award for leadership in completing Phase 1 of the Chester Valley Trail, which eventually will be linked to the Schuylkill Valley Trail intended to run through Limerick, Lower Pottsgrove and Pottstown.

The association says its “mission is to achieve a desirable quality of life and a healthy, competitive economic environment by developing multi-faceted transportation strategies.”
